Under the direction of the car designer Vigil Exner, Dodge entered the post-war car race with its Royal Lancer and Custom Royal Lancer models. The Royal lines originally came equipped with small block engines the first of which was the 270.0 cubic inch V8 175 HP. The Custom Royal Lancer had the powerful Red Ram 277 cubic inch V8 which had 193 HP.

Big Block Wars

By 1958, Dodge introduced 3 more powerful engines due to the big block war that created the era of the American muscle car. Due to recent faults with the Hemi engine style, Dodge decided to go with an alternate wedge-shaped engine. The wedge engine, known as the B engine family, included the 315 V8, the 326 V8, 361 V8, and the 383 V8.

Lancer Two Step

Chrysler’s Valiant compact popularity caused the birth of a two-year experiment of another Dodge Lancer model. During 1961 and 1962 Dodge cloned the Valiant and added luxury bells and whistles to give it a up-style persona. The ’61 version came standard with a slant-6 170 cubic inch engine with an optional 225 slant-6 available. The ’62 model offered a die-cast aluminum 225 engine, which dramatically reduced the weight. All of the engines could be fitted with Chrysler’s Hyper Pak parts which increased the power output of the motors.

The Golden Child

A factory experimental class Lancer was raced at the 1962 NHRA Winternationals by Wayne Weihe. The car was called the Golden Lancer and fitted the Chrysler RB V8 413 cubic inch engine. The Golden Lancer won the C/FX class race and completed the quarter mile in 12.68 seconds.

Last Lancers

The final resurrection of the Dodge Lancer came in 1985. The last models included a hatchback, the luxury Lancer Shelby, and the European GTS. The 1980 models all used 2.2L I4s until the last model in 1989 utilized a 2.5L I4.
