Since 1972 the Civic has used engines that are very well built from the ground up. The Civic is the compact vehicle that was direct competition with the early production Toyota Corolla. It started out with an 1169 cc motor in a front wheel drive chassis that drove well and had good interior room. It was only available with a manual transmission. After 1992, they introduced the vtec 1.6 D16Z6 motor, the engine is not only larger but offer the vtec solenoid on the cylinder head to add performance and power. It was during this time period that the Civic really began to surpass some of its competition like the Nissan Sentra and the Toyota Corolla.

The 6^th generation followed in the steps of the 4^th and 5^th generation. It offered 3 type engines, a 1.6 economy engine, 1.6 base production type and the D16 vtec motor. After 2006 the Civic went with a 2.0 liter motor. This engine comes in different variations also. The new designed vtec engine for this series puts out more horsepower, torque and has a higher RPM tolerance than any of the previous models. As technology improves, the newer Civic engines have variable drivetrain, updated ignition systems and an improved lower end. All of this makes for a really sporty ride and a reliable car.
