Nissan started building the Xterra in the year 2000 as a budget minded off-road SUV with a cheap 4-cylinder engine. The 2.4-liter Xterra engine was also used in the Nissan Frontier and had a great track record with millions of miles under its belt. An optional engine for the Xterra was a 3.3-liter V-6 engine that was similar to the Nissan Maxima engine. The second generation Xterra started in 2005 and was made through 2015, talk about a long run! The engine used was a 4.0-liter V-6 that was also used in the Nissan trucks as well. The transmissions offered were both automatic and manual shift. The Xterra automatic transmission was a 5-speed and the standard shift transmission was a 6-speed. The added gear for the manual transmission did help improve the off-road performance of the Xterra and the hardcore roadies really appreciated this as an option.

In 2014 the Xterra did have an updated applied but was mostly ascetics. The interior got heated front seats, push button controlled air conditioning and even offered leather as an option. The leather was a step away from the initial minimalist approach Nissan brought to market, but like everything else changes always comes. The Xterra was soon replaced by the Nissan Rouge to freshen up the Nissan SUV line.
