Chevy’s Monza 2+2, debuted as a single-model hatchback. The Monza may be described as a subcompact, automobile manufactured by Chevrolet, a division of General Motors for the 1975–1980 model years.

Essentially, the Monza takes its design after the Chevy Vega, with the same 140 CID i-4 engine, width and wheelbase. At the same time, the 1975 Monza 2+2 accommodates the GM-Wankel rotary engine. However, the motor was discontinued because of poor fuel economy and emissions compliance issues. The 1975 engine was replaced with a 4.3 liter V8 engine option with better fuel efficiency. The Monza 2+2 and Towne Coupe and the Ford Mustang II were in competion. Similar variants such as the Oldsmobile Starfire and Buick Skyhawk were manufactured utilizing the Monza 2+2 body, grill and similar trim.

In the next model year, the Pontiac Sunbird variant was offered in both Monza body variations. The authentic Monza engine was the 2.3 liter Vega aluminum-block 140 CID inline-4 motor carrying a single barrel carburetor with 78 horsepower at 4200 rpm. An optional version had the 2-barrel carburetor with 87 horsepower at 4400 rpm. Another option was Chevrolet’s new 4.3 liter (262 cid) V-8 engine for sale. This was the smallest ever V8 on sale by Chevrolet; it featured a Rochester 2-barrel carburetor producing 110 horsepower at 3600 rpm.

In the 1975 model year, the Chevy Monza was able to meet tight emissions testing by replacing a 5.7 liter (350 cid) V8 engine version with a 2-barrel carburetor with only125 hp.

The Monza 2+2 along with its Buick and Oldsmobile counterparts carried GM’s first entry into a torque arm rear suspension. During 1976-77 Vegas and Pontiac Astres followed suite with the same engine. In fact, the base design was also introduced for GM’s 3rd and 4th generation F-bodies, which included the Chevrolet Camaro and Pontiac Firebird.
