There are a few different engines that Dodge used in the manufacturing of the Nitro line of vehicles. Some of the engines were only offered for certain markets like the four cylinder diesel engine offered only in Europe, while other engine sizes and types were offered during the whole lifetime of the Nitro model.
Upon introduction of the Nitro for the 2007 model year, the vehicle came with one of two engines: a 4.0 liter SOHC V6 or a 3.7 liter PowerTech V6. There was also a four cylinder engine option available, but it was sold exclusively in Europe during this time.

The 2008 and 2009 model years of the Nitro mainly offered one size of engine but had a second option available. For both 4×4 and 4×2 models, a standard 3.7 liter V6 engine with 210 horsepower was offered. Alternatively, the R/T package that could be added to the vehicle came with a 4.0 liter V6 engine with 260 horsepower.

The 2010 model year of the Dodge Nitro introduced three new trims: Shock, Heat and Detonator. Each trim had its own unique features that separated itself from the other trims. The Heat was sold with the 3.7 liter V6 engine with 210 horsepower, while the Shock and Detonator trims were sold with the 4.0 liter V6 engine that has 260 horsepower.

The final model year of the Dodge Nitro – 2011 – brought back the same three trims as the previous year, and also used the same engine options. There was one new minor addition to the trims offered, named the Heat 4.0, which came with a five speed automatic transmission along with other minor upgrades such as additional speakers for the sound system.

Even though the Dodge Nitro was only in production for five model years before its life came to an end, the engines used in these models can also be found in other Dodge models, such as Dodge’s Dakota, Durango, and Ram 1500 models as well as Jeep’s Commander and Grand Cherokee models.
