Over the years, there have been many different engines used in the Dodge Ram line of trucks. There have been four generations of Ram trucks produced, and each generation used a newer, more powerful lineup of engine options. Some Dodge Ram engines were diesel while others used regular gasoline, and some of the different engines offered are codenamed Hemi, Magnum, Cummins, Viper, and many more.

The first generation of Dodge Rams began production in 1981 and the generation ended in 1993. Over the 13 year span of the first generation, 10 different engine size and power combinations were used. One of the most prominent engines used in the first generation of Dodge Ram trucks was the Cummins diesel engine, which was completely different than the diesel engines used by Ford and GM because it featured direct fuel injection, making the engine have no need for glow plugs. The Cummins engine was also smaller than the diesel engines used by Ford and GM, having two less cylinders in its straight-six, turbocharged design compared for Ford and GM’s 8 cylinder, naturally aspirated engines.

Dodge Ram’s second generation of Ram trucks came with a redesign, making the trucks look bigger and stronger due to feedback from full size truck owners. This redesign caused sales of the Ram trucks to quadruple in just two years. This nine year long second generation of Ram trucks came with one of eleven different engines, varying in size, power, and fuel type. The most prominent change during the second generation is the change from a 12 valve Cummins diesel engine to 24 valves due to changes in emissions regulations back in 1998. The engines ranged from 3.9 liters (239 CID) up to 5.883 liters (359 CID).

In 2002 and 2003, the third generation of Dodge Ram trucks were debuted. 2002 brought the new Ram 1500 model, while 2003 brought the new model of Ram 2500 and Ram 3500 trucks. This generation’s Dodge Ram engine options were plentiful, ranging from 3.7 liter in the Ram 1500 and 5.7 liter in the 2500/3500 models, to 5.7 liter in the Ram 1500 and 8.0 liter in the Ram 2500/3500 models. The third generation also included a Dodge Ram SRT-10, which boasted an 8.3 liter, 10 cylinder Viper engine.

The fourth and current generation of Dodge Rams began in 2009 and into 2010. The Ram 1500 was offered as fourth generation in 2009 coming with engines ranging from a 3.6 liter Pentastar V6 up to a 5.7 liter Hemi V8. In 2010, the 2500, 3500 and Chassis Cab models were added, offering engines with sizes ranging from 5.7 liter Hemi V8 up to a 6.7 liter Cummins diesel straight six.
