Ford introduction the first generation Ford Aerostar for 1986-1991 to compete with the Dodge Town and Country and the Chrysler Caravan. The first Aerostar had a 2.8 liter V6 engine, the same used in the Ford Ranger and the Ford Bronco II. Ford dropped this motor after 1 year and used the 3.0 liter V6 and the 4.0 liter V6. The 3.0 liter was widely used in the Ford Taurus and the 4.0 liter was used in the Ford Explorer. The transmissions available for the minivan were a 5 speed manual and a 4 speed A4LD automatic transmission. Ford made the Aerostar rear wheel drive to offer a larger towing capacity and the added safety given the engine location.

The second generation Aerostar was made from 1992-1997 and was also the final production for this vehicle. Ford stayed with the same 3.0 liter and 4.0 liter motors but they had some design changes for both models. A very few of this second generation Aerostar offered 4 wheel drive as a factory add on. Also, Ford introduced the 4 speed automatic 4R44E, the 4 speed 4R55E and the 5 speed automatic 5R55E transmissions. The Aerostar took on new features from Ford like plastic bumpers to reduce weight and a standard driver’s side air bag was introduced.

You could purchase different trim levels starting from a stripped down cargo van. The cargo van only had 2 seats in the front and the rest of the van was left unfinished. Ford only painted the interior from the front seats back and added no interior panels or side windows. This was to reduce cost and add the Aerostar to the utility type vehicle similar to the full size Ford Cargo Van. Ford did offer an XL, XLT and an Eddie Bauer trim package, this was the same options given the F-150 and the Explorer.
