The third and final generation of Escort received new engine types and dropped some models. The 1.9 liter SOHC engine was replaced with the 2.0 liter Split Port design. This engine was almost identical to the Ford Focus with the exception of mounting holes on the cylinder head. The 1.8 liter was also discontinued and was upgraded to a 2.0 Zetec DOHC motor. The Escort GT was re-badged with the names Escort ZX2 and was coupe body style. The 3-doorhatchback and 5-door hatchback were dropped from the Escort line. The Escort ZX2 was similar in performance and handling with the Ford Contour and the Mercury Mystic. Even though the Escort ZX2 shared a Zetec 2.0, the engine was would only fit the Escort and no other Ford car. This was due to block and head configuration including the different fuel injection system. In 2001 the Escort ZX2 was renamed the ZX2 and was offered for the first time in a sedan. This was an attempt to offer the car for fleet sales but was not successful. The Ford Focus has much stronger sales so Ford quietly stopped making the Escort line in 2002.
