The Hyundai Accent broke into a number of international markets in 1995 under a number of nameplates. It was branded as the Hyundai Excel in the European lowlands of the Netherlands and Belgium as well as in Australia. The vehicle was given the name “Pony” in France.

No matter what the nameplate, the early Accent buyers had the choice of three gasoline four-cylinder engines. The 1.3-liter engine offered about 85 miles per gallon while the 1.5-liter 12-valve engine boosted power to about 92 horsepower. The top performing engine in the early Accent arsenal generated 105 horsepower on a 1.5-liter 16-valve configuration.

Engineers updated the design on the Hyundai Accent in 2000 and increased the engine size. Accents sold during the 2000 and 2001 model year all were equipped with the 1.5-liter 12- valve four-cylinder engine. In 2002 a 1.6-liter engine was added as an option with a the 2003 model year offering a 1.5-liter three-cylinder fuel injected diesel engine.

A 2006 redesign limited the engine choices to 1.4-liter 94 horsepower four-cylinder gasoline engine listed at 94 horsepower and a 1.6-liter gasoline engine listed at 110 horsepower in addition to the previously issued diesel engine.

The current version of the Hyundai Accent offers three gasoline and two diesel engines as options. The base 1.4-liter gasoline engine produces about 106 horsepower. The other gasoline engines include two versions of a 1.6-liter engine while the diesel engines include 1.4-liter and 1.6-liter variants.

A gasoline/electric hybrid version of the Hyundai Accent made is as far as a 2005 car show but never into production. The vehicle was said to boast a 44 percent improvement in fuel efficiency. It is not known if this version will ever be commercially produced.

The current version of the Hyundai Accent is available as a four-door sedan and five-door hatchback. Previous versions of the two-door coupes and three-door hatchbacks. The vehicle has sold well on the international markets and is a well-recognized nameplate in countries as diverse as Australia and India. The vehicle was listed as the “most dependable sub-compact car” in 2008 by J.D. Power and Associates.
