The first generation of the Pony had a run from 1975 through 1982 after being introduced at the Turin Motor Show in 1974.

Models available were a four-door sedan (introduced in 1975), a small pickup truck (introduced in 1976), a five-door station wagon (introduced in 1977) and a three-door hatchback (introduced in 1980).

Built for fuel efficiency and ease of maneuvering, these vehicles were not produced with powerful motors. The first generation came with one of two Hyundai Pony engine sizes. The base version was a 1.2L/1,238cc inline four-cylinder, the Mitsubishi 4G36 I4. The second engine, the Mitsubishi 4G33 I4, displaced 1.4 liters and was also an inline four-cylinder. The British car magazine Motor tested the Pony GLS and found that it went from 0-60 mph in 15.3 seconds with a top end speed of 92 miles per hour.

The Pony II featured cosmetic changes such as square halogen headlights, a redesigned grille, wrap-around turn indicators and a dashboard featuring gauges that were easier to read.

Hyundai consolidated the product lineup and made the Pony II in a five-door hatchback and two-door pickup. Still not up to U.S. emission standards, the Pony II was exported to the United Kingdom and Canada.

Second generation Hyundai Pony engine sizes were limited. For 1984, jus the Mitsubishi 4G33 I4 was offered. Design improvements gave it a horsepower boost to 70hp with 82lb-ft or torque. Automatic transmissions in four-speed and five-speed overdrive editions were available along with a three-speed automatic.

In 1986, the Mitsubishi 4G16 engine was made available as an option in the hatchback and pickup truck. It produced 74hp with 93lb-ft of torque. The last of the Hyundai Pony engine sizes to be introduced was the Mitsubishi 4G32, a 1.6L four-cylinder engine with a two-barrel carburetor that achieved 110hp.

Most these Hyundai Pony engine sizes were used in other Hyundai vehicles including the Galant, Lancer, Mirage and Stellar.
