The model has progressed substantially since it was unveiled in 1985. In the United States, the sixth generation Sonata uses an advanced direct-injection, four-cylinder, 2.4-liter engine. The new design produces a greater fuel economy and up to 197 horsepower. It is fitted with a Theta II engine. The new models are available with a six-speed automatic transmission.
Engine options vary around the world. In South Korea, the 2011 YF Sonata is offered with a 2.0-liter engine, also of the Theta II blueprint, and it produces 163 horsepower. Among other improvements, the YF Sonata offers an 11 percent increase in fuel economy. Unfortunately, the model did not inspire the level of demand in South Korea that Hyundai had hoped, owing to the awkward, sloppy body design.
The fifth generation (2004-2010) marked the introduction of the Theta I engine, characterized by its all-aluminum composition. Earlier models in this generation feature a 2.4-liter, four-cylinder Theta I that produces 164 horsepower (122kW). There is also a six-cylinder, 3.3-liter version that exerts 237 horsepower. A fuel-efficient, 2.0-liter version is sold in South Korea. Models in the United States are equipped with six airbags, stability control and anti-lock brakes.
The fourth generation (1999-2005), introduces the EF series, with models based on the same platform as the Kia Optima. Available engines include the Hyundai Sirius, a four-cylinder, 2.0-liter model that produces 136 horsepower (103 kW). There is also the Hyundai Delta V-6, a 2.5-liter engine that produces 170 horsepower.
The third generation (1993-1998), unveiled the Y3 Sonata. The standard engine is typically the four-cylinder, 2.0-liter Siris 103 horsepower. But a V-6 Mitsubishi engine model is also available, outputting 143 horsepower.
The second generation, was the first that incorporated Mitsubishi technology. This was the introduction of the four-cylinder Sirius I4 to the United States. In 1990, a V-6 model was unveiled that was 3.0-liters. Other countries featured 1.8-liter and 2.0 liter models.
The first generation was a success in New Zealand, Korea and Canada. However, it did not meet the U.S. emissions standards. Engine sizes varied from market to market, but options included a 1.6-liter
engine manufactured by Honda, a 1.8 liter engine and a 2.0 liter I4.
The Hyundai Sonata is a fine example of innovative engineering. Newer models enjoy a better fuel economy, an efficient direct-injection system and a higher-strength body. Car seekers are well-advised to consider this model as a potential buy.
