The Nissan Altima engines have really evolved over the years. This car was first produced in 1992 and the first generation ended in 1997. The only engine used in the Altima was the KA24DE 2.4 liter, it was a DOHC 4-cylinder design. Even though it stayed with the 2.4-liter motor, as time went on changes were made so they would not all interchange with each other.

The second generation of the Altima was only built for 4 years, from 1998 – 2001 and guess what, Nissan kept using the 2.4-liter engine. 1998 was a redesign for the engine with improvements to the cylinder and a redone block to accommodate the different chassis.

Starting in 2002 through 2006 Nissan finally added an additional engine to the Altima, the 3.5-liter V-6 DOHC. It was designated the VQ35DE and was also used in the Nissan Maxima. The 2.4-liter motor was dropped and the Altima got a new 2.5-liter engine. It was not a well build engine and many people had issues which was a black mark on the car.

The next generation Altima can in a coupe style and was given 2 direct upgraded engines, the QR25DE 2.5-liter engine and also the 3.5 liter VQ35de. This model was given a CVT continual variable transmission that most people did not like. It is a shiftless design. Nissan also offered a Hybrid Altima that did not sell well and was discontinued.

The most current production stated in 2013 and is still being manufactured today. It has a lot of engine options available, the base 1.6 liter used overseas, a 2.0-liter motor, once again a newer QR25DE 2.5-liter engine and last is the larger 3.5 liter VQ35DE V-6 engine. The CVT transmission is still being used but has been upgraded several times to offer much better performance and reliability.
