The Toyota 4Runner is 1 of the longest running vehicles Toyota has ever made. Back in 1984 the 4Runner was introduced and had a 2.4 liter 22R carbureted engine. It greatly resembled the Toyota truck with a fiberglass camper on it. Then the following year Toyota offered the 22RE which is the fuel injected version. To add to the mix in 1986 and 1987 the 4Runner had an optional 22R-TE which was a turbo model. This was done to compete with the Bronco II, Chevy S-10 and the Nissan Pathfinder.

Starting in 1988 Toyota introduced the 3.0 liter V6 SOHC engine. This improvement helped with overall performance for the mid-side SUV and made it a real contender. In 1989 the 4 door version was available and 2 wheel drive and 4 wheel drive options were getting upgrades. The transmission for the 2.4 lite were a 2wheel drive 5 speed, a 4 wheel drive 5 speed, a 2 wheel drive automatic and a 4 wheel drive automatic. The same option was available for the 3.0 V6 as well.

In 1996 the 4Runner moved to a 2.7 3RZ motor or a 3.4 5VZ V6 engine. Both engines were seen as advancements in the industry. The 3.4 liter engine did not have the notorious head gasket issue that the earlier 3.0 liter engine had. That head gasket recall forced a big recall and was a setback for the 4Runner. Things stayed pretty constant thru 2001.

The next generation 4Runner rolled out in 2002 and ran through 2009. They engine was changed to 4.0 liter 1GR motor that increased towing. If you really wanted to step up, for the first time a 4.7 liter V8 2UZ engine was available. This put the 4Runner in the market with the Ford Explorer.

The fifth generation 4Runner has a 4.0 liter V6 Dual VVT-i which is again is a great improvement over the earlier 4.0 liter motor. However, the 4.7 liter engine was not carried over to this vehicle.
