The Toyota Corolla was introduced in 1966 and is still in production today. Starting in 1984 Toyota was really making improvements. It was available in a front wheel drive or a rear wheel drive version. Both types shared a 1.6 4AC engine. The same engine used in the Chevy Nova. The only different in the FWD and the RWD long block was a mount on the front of the engine that came thru where the timing belt was located. The car stayed the same thru 1987.

In 1988-1991 the Corolla took on a new look, motor and suspension. The engines available were a 4AF which was taken from the 4A but was a DOHC engine. The next engine in line was the 1.6 liter 4AFE which was the same engine just fuel injected so it had a different cylinder head. Some of the Corolla had a 4AGZE 1.6 liter supercharged engine to really add performance to the car.

Starting in 1992-1997 also had a 1.6 4AFE but the engine was a complete redesign from the earlier 1.6 4AFE. The block, cylinder and mounts were redone to fit the new chassis and electrical system. After 1998-2001 the car was completely built from the ground up again. This time the new suspension adding to handling and a new improved 1.8 1ZZ engine was used. The engine had the same configuration as the Toyota Celica 1.8l but the secondary oil pan was different to accommodate mounts so the 2 would not interchange. The engine was used thru 2002, also it was used in the Geo Prizm.

After 2002 Toyota used an upgraded 1ZZ 1.8 liter engine and also offered the 2ZZ 1.8 liter high performance engine. These engines have performed so well the Corolla was offered with these same motors until 2008. The transmissions offered include a 5 speed standard for the 1ZZ and a 6 speed manual for the 2ZZ as well as a 4 speed automatic for both types.

In 2009-2011 the Corolla now has a greatly improved 1.8 2ZRFE liter engine or a 2.4 liter 2AZFE engine. Both have proven to be very dependable and get great fuel economy.
